There is scanner software available for OS 9 and OS X at:

www.hamrick.com

It's called Vuescan and can be ordered for $59.95 US.  It will work 
with a wide variety of scanners.  Reviews of the software can be seen 
on the website.  You can download a trial version to test it out 
before ordering.

Finally, I have software that will work well with my Umax Astra 3450. 
The software that came with the scanner (Vistascan 3.7.5) was totally 
unsuitable and I'm not the only one who had trouble with it.
