[muglo] Virtues of Mail and other stuff

Hello Muglo-ites:
The spring term is over at Malaspina University-College, and the
election is almost over, so now I can respond to some of the muglo
threads.
Re sending attachments in Mail: I have no problem sending them to PCs
as long as I attach the extension .doc when sending them in MSWord.
Usually if people can't open them or find nothing in them it's because
they have a virus.
My only complaint about Mail is its spell-checker, which is very poor.
I find it doesn't pick up all my typos, so I have to run a spell-check,
then go through and manually proof it again - which sort of negates the
whole purpose of a spell-checker, to my way of thinking, and since I'm
a lousy typist, is really annoying. Outlook Express has a much more
sophisticated spell-checker.
I also wanted to let you folks know how the saga of the G4 laptop from
hell ended. It's actually behaving itself quite well, now. I upgraded
my operating system to Panther, and also upgraded to the latest version
of MS Office for Macs. I bought a new mouse - a logitech - and it
works like a dream.
I have a snazzy little Kingston flash drive, which I just saved my
thesis and book manuscript to in a few nanoseconds, and I have Norton
AntiVirus 9, so I'm well-protected.
I found out that the Norton Utilities 8 which I bought from Symantec
had compatibility problems with Panther, so that it was giving false
reports of major errors on my hard drive when there weren't any.
Norton won't give me a refund for it, by the way, even though their own
website said that it had a problem.
I've installed a program from AtomicBird called Macaroni that
automatically looks after your HD; it's not as sophisticated as Norton,
but it doesn't have as many problems, and only costs $17 CAD.
So, I'm happy at last - after having my logic board, battery, hard
drive and mouse replaced (although I'm missing some fonts which my
helpful local techie is going to help me restore).
I'm going to be in London for the Home County Folk Festival in July -
maybe I'll see some of you there.
Cheers,
Kathryn
