If you are using it to transfer files why not get a hub and connect 
your computers into a local network.  I do this with my mix of OS 
9.2.2, 10.3.9, 10.4.3 and XP SP2 systems with no problems.  You can 
easily connect or disconnect the ethernet cabling without worrying 
about when to do it (power off or on etc - I haven't had any problems)

In regards the plug-in/out routine like IOmega says if it works go with 
it.  I think you might have problems only if a transfer was occurring 
when you pull the plug.  Other more 'technical' members of the list 
might have a different take.
