We should have some safeguards in place. I resurrected this site a few
months ago to publish the results of the 'Best Mac apps' survey, and
then found out about the dormant proboards site. At that time I
suggested we try out both sites as often as we could and then hold a
vote sometime to select one or both or some other combination.
One problem with the Google site is the easy access. The public can
enter the site without signing in and upload files. Anyone can edit
files, but only the author can delete them. This shortcoming may
preclude the use of this site in the future, as the site can be
vandalized too easily. The honour system will only last so long.
Paul, it is not my decision to make regarding which site to use. I am
trying to experiment with each in order to vote fairly as a member if
the chance ever comes up.
The freewebs format allows a quick exchange, but inundates members
with a lot of emails. It also has shortcomings with attachments(a
picture is still worth a thousand words). The Google site is geared to
file storage and quick access, but short of a structured forum. I
haven't tried the proboards site enough to form an opinion, but it may
win out by elimination if we only use one.
