Hi, I just d/l and installed The GIMP & X-Windows (BIG downloads took me 20 mins on ADSL... don't want to know what dial-up would be). GIMP works quite nicely on my machine (G3 400) and if you're not itching to drop $500 on PhotoShop it will certainly fit the bill (REQUIRES OS X 10.3)... Or, if you'd like an app that you can install (for free) on pretty much any computer you own, whether it runs Mac OS X, GNU/Linux or Windows (there will never be an OS 9 version b/c OS 9 is too "archaic" an OS (& there aren't enough users)). You've got to install the X-Window environment first. Then, copy the GIMP app to your HD and open it. You'll have to wait a little while for the X11 environment to open up. After that GIMP will work at a decent speed. The GIMP has a Dock icon when you're running it and you can quit GIMP from that Dock icon but that's all you can do from there. To switch to and from the GIMP application you have to switch to X11. The reason for this is that GIMP is actually an X Window app and not a Mac OS X app, much like what happens with Classic apps. The app runs in their own environment (Classic, X11) and don't see or know anything about OS X. The environment provides all the services they need (drawing to screen, mouse clicks, keypresses, etc... X Windows doesn't do as much as Classic though... it offloads its hard work to other libraries, and since OS X is a Unix this is easy to do). You can set the X-windows Preferences to operate in "full screen" mode and that'll clean up the GIMP interface clutter significantly (by hiding the Mac OS X clutter). To switch out of full-screen mode press command-option-a. Same keypress to enter. If you're in full screen mode this'll effectively "hide" the application (FYI: you can't command-tab whilst in "full screen" mode). <http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/download/> (43 MB) <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22990> (32 MB) Eric. _________________________________________________ For information concerning the MUGLO List just click on http://muglo.on.ca/Pages/joinus.html Our Archives can be viewed at //www.freelists.org/archives/muglo Don't forget to periodically check our web site at: http://muglo.on.ca/
