I've run out of interest in this whole argument. AW does have its fine
points -- mostly they resolve around simplicity, but, unfortunately
simplicity is also often limiting (OS X is a great OS in theory but
sometimes it really could handle a bit more sophistication -- the Dock
for example is a pitiful solution for a launcher/switcher and violates
so many of Apple's design principles...). Word ain't exactly the
epitome of design simplicity but *it gets the job done*.
Unfortunately, the other word processors out there aren't any better.
AW really is long in the tooth and the spread sheet needs a pretty
dramatic over view. The whole word processing and office paradigm is
overdue for an overhaul. A hybrid page layout-word processing mode of
working is needed and someone needs to implement it CORRECTLY.
I've been unhappy with the way Office has gone in recent years with
its integration, and, well Apple's AppleWorks is even worse since you
can't uncouple one app from the other.
I'm curious to see what Apple's new "word processor" will look like.
Supposedly part of it is OSS (GNU)-based so perhaps we'll be seeing
some spin offs in some of the open source projects as well.

'Zacetly. Unfortunately what's out there simply isn't that good (yet).
Eric.
