We, in the Mac community have been fortunate that Macs have been
relatively 'safe' and not targeted by hackers. Below is an excerpt
from another list that may help to put a perspective to the Mac/virus
problem - and AFAIK, we can't even be inadvertent automatic carriers
unless we forward on an infected file or site to a PC user:

Marian, the politically correct answer is that you should have
anti-virus protection. But in reality, it's not so cut and dry in my
opinion. I probably get more email than almost anyone on the list
(average around 1500 emails a day), including lots of attachments,
and plenty of PC viruses. But I've never received a Mac virus by
email or online. Now, admittedly, I may be a bit more email-savvy
when it comes to opening attachments than an average employee, and I
don't open attachments with unusual extensions or that I have any
doubt as to what it is. But I haven't seen any Mac viruses in years
-- probably five or six years, at least. I do not have anti-virus
protection on any of my Macs, and never have had it. I did buy it
once, but never installed it.
