Thank you Alan. I needed to hear from someone in 10.4.4 that this was
not par for the course.

... So that's where "Keyboard" ended up!!!

Just ran through the diagnostic. No dice (didn't expect it to work).
I'd already created a new account to test this behaviour in a virgin
environment and it didn't change things. I suspect I've run into
something more sinister -- either hardware or OS-level software have
gone buggy. I'll keep an eye peeled on Macintouch and see if anyone
else has a similiar experience.

PS Just noticed a neat thing. It looks like Apple finally acknowledged
that most English speaking Canadian Mac users don't use Canadian-CSA
as their keyboard layout (because our keyboards are "US" and that's
what we learned on). "Canadian" and "US" are now identical keyboard
layouts :-) :-) :-)! (and, then there's "US Extended" which I suspect
is an "industry standard" (or supports Spanish... or both)).

Well, now I'll give the keyboard a whirl on the PB. If it works there
then I know it's the OS on the mini. If not, then there's a chance the
keyboard is on its way to going belly up or its an OS problem that
affects both of our machines. (since the PB was recently upgraded to
10.4.4 as well).

Eric.
