[muglo] Stopping the Pizza! ?

Back in the good old days  :-)  it was possible to use Command + ' to 
abort an action
Doesn't seem to work with Panther .............and one is stuck with 
that interminable spinning pizza - until IT (the system?) decides it 
can let you repossess your machine's control.

Anybody know of a current 'stop or cancel action' workaround or key 
board command?

I was going to suggest this as the answer for an earlier posting about 
cancelling a Printer instruction , which used to be oh so simple!
