[muglo] Stealth mode in a Mac

A writer colleague on another list has given me his permission to
share this tip with the MUGLO list. I have not seen this tip
mentioned on the list before, but, if it has been mentioned, my
apologies for bringing it up again.

Mac is slowing down: ... put your Mac
into "stealth mode" so that it does not respond to other computers on
the net probing and looking for a place to dump cookies, or worse.*
...

*Stealth mode in a Mac:...In the main menu, go to
System Preferences (the grey box with an apple and a switch). The
third line down of icons should give you "Sharing" in the fourth
position. Open it and click "Firewall". In the bottom right corner,
click "Advanced". On the resulting panel, click "enable Stealth Mode".
That's how it is on my four year old 10.4.11 machine. If you have a
more recent machine, say a 10.5.X, you may find that the Mac
engineers moved exactly the same thing out of "Sharing" and into
"Security" a few lines up.
