Speaking of the big boys...

I hit a new low with Bell Sympatico High Speed Edition!

$30/month if I signed on for a year. I was (satisfied) with Toronto
Free Net (tfnet.ca) but couldn't pass up the opportunity to get three
months of free high speed service from Bell ($120 worth for a single
phone call... figure it cost me about 30 mins of my time total... I
don't value my time at $240/hr ;-).

After three months were up I called Bel to cancel service and return
to tfnet.ca.

Two days later got a call from Bell wanting to "confirm" my decision
to leave them and find out why I wanted to leave (I wanted a static IP
address and tfnet.ca is $8/mo cheaper than Bell).

They offered $35 right off the bat after my first "no thank you".
$35 (dynamic IP with Bell) vs. $37 (static IP)... not enough of a
savings to warrant staying with Bell.

Then after telling her "no thank you" and expecting that to be the end
of things the sales lady said she couldn't do anything about a static
IP but how about $30/mo. Hmm. $80/year less _and_ I must
(begrudgingly) admit that Bell does have the most responsive access
around (and I've sampled ADSL providers far and wide in recent years).
If I really want to have a proper DNS entry for my server (rather than
the free workaround I have now ;-) I can always pony up 30 USD for a
proper dynamic IP DNS service.
