  My 14 year old son has a white G3 iBook which he uses for  
schoolwork, for the last two years now. It does that job quite well.  
For dipping your toes in, it doesn't seem like a bad deal, but it  
doesn't have a place at the head of the pack. For your use it will be  
pushing the envelope inside of  year. It should suit your son just fine.
