You can do a batch job on a folder of files in GC...

Paul's 'Command - I' suggestion should allow you to alter the OS  
behaviour for all such file types.

A job for Applescript actually. I'll see if I can round up a rename  
script for you.

Automator can do the file type conversions for you. And Automator can  
run Applecripts.

If the OS is set to open TIFF in Photoshop, and jpeg in GC, then we  
can't change that just in Automator, even if we change the file type.
