To what web site are you redirected? I took a quick peek at the code and
didn't see an obvious redirect.
[OFF TOPIC tourist comments begin]
PS Paris is a fascinating city. I loved the culture and the feel but
couldn't stand their ingrained (governmental?) "phobia" (?) of the English
(and to a lesser extent, other) language. For a tourist city they are about
a century behind the competition in terms of catering to tourists' language
needs at tourist facilities -- I was utterly shocked by just *how* poor
their English was (especially compared to how the Dutch provide tourist
services in various languages).
My favourite complaint in Paris (one that I heard many times in Dutch,
German and English (and in English by Japanese and Arabs) ;-)... English
really is the lingua franca (pun intended) of our times, isn't it?) was one
articulated by a Dutch person in Dutch (translated):
"Why the hell can't these <censored> learn to speak English like the rest of
the world? At least then we'd be able to understand what's going on?".
My French was good enough to be able to communicate with most people but
Veronica's was weaker & that's where I could see how poor their English was.
I'm now torn. On the one hand I want to improve my French because it's a
language I enjoy. On the other, I'm not sure I want to learn the language of
(a) people(s) who are so anglophobic that they purposely exclude English
(and other languages for that matter) (I thought it was just a Quebec
trait... I guess it's a feature of the French, regardless of geography?).
Veronica made a very astute observation -- they only provided English
information when it made *their* lives easier (strange for a city in which
tourism is a multi-billion Euro industry... customer service is not their
strong suit).
It was neat to see how the all-mighty dollar (or in this case Euro) talks.
In private businesses English service was *much* better than at public/gov't
run facilities. The people still couldn't speak English very well (utterly
shocking when contrasted with the Ntherlands where the fifty-year old store
clerk in a back-water was competent in English and in the main cities where
the majoirty of people were *bilingual*... they could switch between Dutch
and English as comfortably as I) but they made damn sure that they had
English on their menus or signs.
Ah well, IIRC the French are waging an internal battle. There is a
recognition amongst some of the more foreward thinking elements that the
dearth of multi-lingualism (and most notably, English compentency) is
hurting the French culture (since it's an economic disadvantage in an
English-speaking world not to speak English) more than it is helping
perserve it.
Anyway, happy x-mas and merry new year!
Eric.
