Well, I think that your OS X install included the install of Stuffit, 
right? And probably your OS X pre-dates a change in the way that 
Aladdin (maker of Stuffit) distributes/markets/ their various 
utilities.

What is your OS version? Have you tried running Software Update to 
see if a newer version of Expander is offered?

Stuffit Expander has always(?) been free. (Thank you, Aladdin. ;-) 
And it used to be available as a separate downloaded/installed app. 
But about a year ago (I think) Aladdin started offering it as part of 
a package, called Stuffit Standard, that includes several of their 
other utilities. The other utilities in the package (DropZip, 
DropStuff, etc.) are shareware, apps that Aladdin wants you to pay 
for. So, they kinda prompt you to pay when you launch them. I don't 
know whether they are "time-limited" or not, I rarely use them. Maybe 
somebody else knows what the deal is on this.
