It's usually the reflectivity of the DVD media that causes the
problems*. Older lasers (DVD players) and the corresponding readers
are usually less sensitive so these DVD players are more sensitive to
media quality. Also, the quality of your DVD player will influence
play-back success -- you'll have more success with a higher quality
DVD player than a lower quality one.

*Colour influences success in some DVD players. Also, burn speed and
quality of your DVD burner will influence success (basically, there
are no guarantees when it comes to successful burning of DVDs or
CDs... other than more expensive _sometimes_ =3D better success).

However, that said, sometimes the higher quality (i.e. name brand)
players will be blocked from playing certain types of burned discs,
including legally burned DVDs (some of the no-name Chinese DVD players
will play back nearly any burned disc and media format (DivX being the
most popular pirate format) under the sun because they're designed
with piracy in mind).
