When in finder, press Command-?. In the resulting Mac Help window,
type 'receive fax' into the search window in the upper right hand
corner and press return. For me in Tiger (OS X.4.6), the third topic
listed was the most informative. This is the result:
Setting up your Mac to receive faxes
You can receive a fax on your computer, and then save it to disk,
email it to someone, or print it. You'll be able to receive faxes
even if you aren't around and aren't logged in to your computer.
To receive faxes, your computer must:
Be connected to an open phone line. No one can be using the phone
line to connect to the Internet or make a call.
Not be in sleep mode.
Your computer can still receive faxes automatically when the login
window is displayed.
Open System Preferences, click Print & Fax, and then click Faxing.
Select "Receive faxes on this computer," and choose the number of
rings before your computer answers a fax.
If you want to receive faxes automatically, make sure your computer
answers the phone before any other device that may be connected to
it, such as a phone answering machine.
If don't want to receive faxes automatically, set the number of rings
to the highest number possible, and use the Fax status menu to
receive faxes manually.
If you want to control your computer's fax functions from the menu
bar, select "Show fax status in menu bar."
If you don't want to receive faxes automatically, you must select
this option. If you receive faxes automatically, you may want to
select this option so you can view status information more easily.
Type your fax number in the My Fax Number field.
This is used to identify your computer when you send or receive a fax.
Choose what to do with the fax after it arrives.
You can save it as an image file, email it to someone, and print it
to a printer.
To receive a fax manually, wait for the phone to ring, and choose
Answer Now from the Fax status menu
Again, this is from Tiger, so your results may vary. Please note
that as mentioned, call answer and call waiting services on your
phone line may cause conflicts. If this is something you wish to do
occasionally only, then you can enable fax receiving only when
required or only manually. Please also be sure to enter your fax
number (or phone number) in the correct spot as it is legally required.
