Which Power PC model do you intend to use for your server?
Why do you need to boot and shut-down remotely?
Also, what software will it be using and what protocol? FTP, HTTP,
FirstClass, Hotline, mIRC, etc?
You can set the computer to turn on and off at specified times using the
Energy Saver control panel in OS 9. Depending on the software it can
cooperate or not. You can also set the computer to *always* turn on. On
newer machines this requires a software setting IIRC. On older ones (in all
likelihood since you didn't mention G3, G4 or G5 after PowerPC) you can
twist the power button to "force" it to always turn on whenever it has
power.
Turning it *on* remotely (except for a scheduled wake-up) will require a
specialised hardware solution. Turning it off or restarting remotely is
possible with software. You could pick up an old copy of Timbuktu or Apple
Remote Desktop off eBay or the LowEndMac.com swaplist.
To do a manual, local shutdown you need either (i) a keyboard, or (ii) a
mouse and monitor (to select shutdown from the relevant menu).
I would suggest you leave the keyboard hooked up to the server in case you
ever need to do command-control-power to reset, or hit power key followed by
enter to do a safe manual shut down or power key followed by r to do a safe
manual restart.
You can run a peripheral-less server but OS 9 is simply not stable enough to
run solo.
You *could* install Yellow Dog Linux as your server software. This would
allow you a *great* deal of remote control without great expense -- you can
login remotely using any Telnet or SSH client and send remote commands to
restart or shutdown you computer. This could even be automated/scripted
depending on your client computer. I have been lead to believe that the
installation and setup process of YDL 3.0 is fairly approachable, and, once
operational requires little modification. Additionally, YDL has servers for
nearly every web and network protocol imaginable.
Besides, even if you don't like it, it's only an investment of $40 (or $0 if
you take the time to download and burn your own CDs)... though, the $40 does
get you an install manual and 6 CDs and saves you the headache of
downloading and burning.
