It's not a printing problem per se. Believe it or not, I've actually had no
problems whatsoever with OS X and printing (then again, I've only been
printing to PostScript printers so I've only been using PostScript drivers
which are by-and-large polished and bug-free (compared to their USB/serial
brethren)).
My problem is that in OS X 10.2 with the printer drivers I've tried (HP,
Generic) I can't find an option to select manual feed printing.
What I normally do is print the even pages in reverse order. Then, I'll
print the odd pages in regular order and select manual feed. I then go up t=
o
the printer, take the odd pages, flip them over and put them into the manua=
l
feed tray, and, voila, I have double-sided printing.
My solution to the current problem has been to either fire up the Classic
version of an application and print (using the LaserWriter 8 driver with th=
e
HP1200 PPD) where I have manual-auto feed control, or to print to PDF (in O=
S
X that's an option) and fire up Acrobat 4 (since reader 5.1 is a Carbon app
it opens up into OS X) and print.
I'm staying far, far away from OSS solutions at the moment (call me a cynic=
,
but I find that complex OSS packages are no more stable (and quite often,
*less* stable) than commercial/"official" counterparts).
PS Mosaic 1.2.x is _starting_ to be an acceptable browser. It still is slow
as a dog on OS X (450 MHz G3, 576 MB RAM, OS X 10.2.2) but at least it
doesn't crash every 10 seconds, and is starting to handle more pages
(though, I did run into a number that _none_ of the Gecko-based browsers
could handle). It still has far too much crap associated with it, the
e-mailer is an obtrusive piece of **** (I ended up copying the URL for a
page into Chimera and clicking on the mail link -- Entourage opened
properly, AS IT SHOULD HAVE (but didn't) when I clicked on it in Mosaic),
and Composer generates code that's incompatible with Netscape 4.x (I have a
webpage that I maintain using Composer in Netscape 4.8, and Netscape 4.8
crashed loading the Mosaic 1.2.x generated page.
PSS Netscrash 7.0.1 is a different story -- it's still using a Winblows
interface, and is a _bloated_, slow app that's crash prone (it was deleted
quite quickly after being downloaded ;)
PSSS Chimera 0.6 is progressing nicely. It doesn't have all the bloat crap
that Mosaic and Netscrash 7.0.1 have so it's actually _fast_, _stable_ and,
most importantly, MAC-LIKE!!! (well, so is Explorer, but there are those
with a natural allergy to Microsoft (my Microsoft allergy only goes as far
as the Windows OS... there isn't a spreadsheet out there that can even touc=
h
Excel for functionality (Visual BASIC makes a world of difference))).
