Canon has an interesting line of inkjets out (i series... we have an i550
and it does a good job). They've separated out their colour cartridges. So,
if you run out of one colour, you don't have to pay for a whole new
cartridge but instead can buy the colour that ran out (and, as you may know,
colours run out at different rates).

Of course, they're not as inexpensive as say a Lexmark, but, the less you
pay up front, the more you pay down the road.
