While I swear by Canon printers, not at them, There is no real reason
to buy a "dedicated" printer.

In a word No!! If you want long lasting photos there are archival
papers around at "Henry's", "Reades" etc., But my experience of
restoring many 50 to 100 year old prints says don't worry about it.
Costco sell excellent photo paper that I have used for a couple of
years with no complaints.
