I have had the same question as you and have tried and tried to save
pictures from powerpoint to apple works and it is not possible. They
weren't recognized in AppleWorks program. The only way I could get the
images from PowerPoint was to control click the .pps file then get info
change the ownership & permission to read and write open the document
in PowerPoint and then I was only able to copy the pictures to the
Stickey Notes and from there I printed to a PDF but then when I tried
to crop it it wouldn't work. I am stuck unless anyone else has another
idea or Application that you could copy the file to.
