To be fair, it may not be all Apple's fault, but a combination of
Apple, Adobe, and in my case Epson. The Snow Leopard compatibility
list does not mention the Twain driver problem and Adobe does not
bother itself with Twain compatibility.
Photoshop includes support for a technology called TWAIN, which lets
you control certain image-acquisition devices--including many
scanners, the scanner portion of many all-in-one printers, and some
webcams--directly from within Photoshop Elements.
During its startup process, the Photoshop Elements 6 Editor loads its
TWAIN plug-in. This plug-in immediately begins communicating with the
driver for each scanner or other TWAIN-compatible device that you have
installed on your computer.
If the TWAIN plug-in cannot communicate with a device driver, then the
application crashes.
