I should think a combination of tools will do the job. I would try the  
polygonal lasso then switch to the magic wand, perhaps, and with the  
option key held down, click to deselect bits of the image. The  
sensitivity can be changed.

You can also use the background eraser, or use the pen tool to trace  
out a path and turn it into a selection.
