Ilbert,
The "best" deals for paper (8.5 x 11) that I've found, have been at Costco.
They have been selling Kodak and Epson glossy papers in packages of 100
sheets at $38.00 and $41-43.00 per box (These are guestimates as to what I
paid... it's been a while since I bought them).
The Kodak is a cooler paper than the Epson, for the same settings on my
printer, a Canon i9100.
You might be wondering why I but "best" in quotes? I'll explain.
I do some commercial printing (up to 13" x 19") with my printer so was
concerned about the water resistance of my prints since Canon says the ink
is not waterproof and my experience was that it wasn't water proof. I was
wondering what would happen if a bit of water gets on one of my prints or
even a lot of water, so I did a water test which turned out to produce some
very interesting results.
I keep three brands of paper in stock: Canon, Epson and Kodak. I took glossy
samples of the Kodak and Epson papers that I had printed months earlier and
a new sample of the Canon (Photo Paper Pro) that I had printed earlier the
same day and ran them under the tap. I was quite shocked by the results.
The ink on the Kodak paper began to run (it didn't walk first! :-) as fast
as the water moved, but what was most distressing was that within a few
seconds, the emulsion itself began to wash off the paper. It eroded fastest
where there was no ink, and slower where the ink was denser. The white
border around the paper disappeared the fastest.
The Epson paper was a little better... While the ink ran almost immediately,
the emulsion withstood the stream of water for about 30 seconds and then
slowly began to let go. On the Epson paper, some of the inks seemed to take
longer to go than others. Perhaps this was a density thing. If there was any
mechanical abrasion, such as finger rubbing, the emulsion freely let go.
The biggest surprise came from the Canon Photo Pro papers. Although the ink
was only a few hours old when the test was performed, the Canon paper/ink
combination was under the tap for 20 minutes without any deterioration in
the image quality or the surface emulsion. And further, finger abrasion, did
not create any observable change that could be identified when the paper was
wet or after it had been dried out.
Be aware that all the papers warped when they dried out. None of them are
designed for full immersion.
A test the next day with Canon's High Resolution Matte Paper (28lb) produced
a similar result to the Photo Paper Pro paper. Being a lighter paper, it
warped quite badly.
So if water resistance is a concern, you might like to test out your
paper/ink combos before you go ahead with the job.
I would be interested in hearing the results if anyone else tries this test
with other types of paper/ink combinations.
