Good question Eric, I have a Brother Multi Function Centre which was supposed to
be OS X compatible ... it is not ... scanning is on hold until Japan gets the
software developed to get it to work with OS X. Scanning even with OS 9.2 is
about 1/10th as good as the SCSI scanner that went to my brother. (I have a G4
with both OS 9.2 and OS X.)

As far as the scanner is concerned, at the moment it is non functional. The
other features work well. Printing is, as has been suggested, only exceptional
if you have a fair bit of coloured printing to do. If most of what you do is
Black and White printing then I would agree with Eric about using a B&W Laser
printer.

As another person reminded me, the copy feature is available to you if you have
a
scanner and a printer so one really doesn't need a machine to copy for you. Fax
is also available to most of us if we have software and a phone line access.

I do like the Multi Function Centre that I have as the price was right and even
with the added cost of ink cartridges it is good for me. (It doesn't hurt that I
had to return the machine to the Retailer and because of the discourteous and
damned slow manner in which they handled the repair, I received the equivalent
of
three black ink cartridges from them as compensation.)

I would recommend that others who do more B&W printing than I, actually do
invest
in a scanner and a laser printer especially if you have phone access (modem) and
software. You will end up with the same functions that I have with my Multi
Function Centre.

Hope this adds a possible other dimension for you Paul.

take care

Susan
