I strongly recommend against doing it without an initialise!!! You can use
Apple's HD formatting utility in OS 9 (whatever it's called) to partition
your new drive quite safely -- it just requires a format.

What you could do is, if you have a back-up medium like CD-R or Zip, simply
back-up your new HD, reformat the HD and then copy everything back onto one
of the partitions. If you're doing video you may find it worthwhile to have
two or three partitions -- one for OS + Applications, one for miscellaneous
documents (like word processing, spread sheet, etc) and one for the video +
scratch files.

Having multiple partitions would also allow you to run multiple OSes (if you
so desire) like OS 8.6 and 9.1 on the same drive.

Your Performa 6400 can be upgraded to 9.1 if you so desire (free download
from Apple).

PSS If you have a digital camcorder it may have a FireWire interface and you
could use that with a PCI FireWire (IEEE 1391) card in your 6400 to capture
the video directly (if you don't do so already).

Eric.
