Thanks, Eric, for the suggestions.
I was able to solve my problem with a workaround. I downloaded an update Avid
Cinema v. 1.1.5 (which turned out to be an ungrade (i.e. the complete
application!)) and was able to manually copy the required plug-ins, Avid Cinema
Extension, etc., from the Avid Cinema CD-ROM to my hard drive.
This enabled me to capture video from my digital camcorder, add titles, and
save the movie to disk. The only flaw that has surfaced is that, when preparing
the movie for export one option involves clicking on a button labeled "Save
movie for ..." and making a choice of medium from a drop-down menu. Trouble is
the menu does not appear when clicked! I've checked around and confirmed that
the required items are indeed in the Output Formats folder where they are
supposed to be, but for reasons unknown Avid Cinema doesn't recognize them. I
had wanted to choose the option "www/internet", which I believe is a Quicktime
format.
I wonder whether this flaw results from my not installing Avid Cinema in the
approved manner from the CD-ROM.
My alternative was to load the Avid movie into Premiere 3.0 (sans titles),
create new titles, and save it as a Quicktime movie.
Your suggestion to partition my drive seems a good idea. I note that a product
Partition ToolKit is available, but it requires a G3 and Mac OS 9.1/9.2. Any
thoughts on how to partition, without having to initialize the whole drive!
