Three possibilities come to mind:
-The internal cooling fan is seized, etc. (To conserve battery life, some
laptops have a thermal switch to activate them and this could be busted too)
Although they are very quiet they can usually be heard so next time it gets
really hot, put your ear down and listen for the fan
-The air exhaust/intake port(s) is/are clogged with dust, hair, etc. (Use a
vacuum and tweezers around all casing openings)
-The exhaust port was blocked by paper, books, lap, knees, etc. (if this is
the case, the heat problem is likely intermittent
