[muglo] Re: (OT): Re Entourage

I just had to respond to the comments about telephone deregulation. We may
think that the American telephone deregulation would be a great idea, but in
Canada we need to keep some sort of regulation on our telephone system. We
have a population of approximately 35 million people living in a country
that in area is much larger than the United States. Consider that
approximately 20 - 25 million people lived in Pennsylvania alone. There is
a definite scale of economies that will allow for a more deregulated system
in the US which would be competitive. Through regulation of our telephone
system we are able to ensure that most of Canada has adequate telephone
service at affordable prices. Communications companies must provide service
to all areas of Canada. Living in southern Ontario can blind you to
problems experienced in other parts of our country even in our own province.
There are areas in Ontario that still have party lines. Needless to say
these people do not Internet yet have high speed. Through regulation the
government has asked for a progress report that would see these party lines
disappear. We also have communities that do not have high speed Internet
within their boundaries or cellular telephone service and are waiting for
the day that they can have both. I remember talking to someone when I live
in this community just a short two years ago that was excited to have 28k
Internet connection. It was an accomplishment the get 64k into the library.
The office I worked at paid $300.00 a month to high speed into it. Of
course this was still significantly less than the connection most of us
currently have at home. I believe that we do have a good communications
system in Canada because it is regulated and all Canadians can have access.
With a system like our American neighbours, we in Southern Ontario may find
it cheaper, but there would be a huge part of the population that would have
to do with out because they could not afford it. Or more simply the
government would provide assistance from its taxes.
