[muglo] [OT] Escarpment Telecom as an alternative to the LD companies

Hi, another rant that I have is that the big LD companies have REDUCED the
services they LD services they offer. They're more expensive than when we
left and you have to pay a monthly fee for the priviledge of being their
customer.

It's amazing how much phone service (both cell phones and land lines) has
gone downhill - so much for competition! Now it's time for the police to
step in. It only gets CHEAPER to operate phone systems, not more expensive.

Anyway, for those of you fed up with Sprint and/or Bell, I suggest you check
out a not-for-profit joint. You'll be doing four things: 1. supporting
conservation of the Niagara Escarpment; 2. saving yourself money (depending
on your calling habits); 3. saving money on your taxes (since 20% of your
phone bill is a charitable donation); and, 4. (most important to me)
sticking it to Bell/Sprint.

Their rates are amazing compared to what I was being offered by Bell and
Sprint. NO monthly access fee (both Bell and Sprint wanted at least $3/mo or
$4/mo), and they have two plans:
1) $0.08/min in Ontario, $0.085/min rest of Canada any time of day
2) Daytime: $0.15/min; Evening/weekends: $0.10/min for first 200 min, "free"
for next 600 mins

And, I think they offer a 1-800 service where calls will be billed to you at
your calling plan's rate.

For international calls (and for calls away from home) they provide you with
a calling card which you use from your own phone but it may just be worth
the hassel: $0.03/min to UK and Netherlands (those were the rates I inquired
about). If you use it from other phones I think there's a $0.10/min
surchage.

And, 20% of your bill goes to conserve the Niagara Escarpment (rather than
the typical profit that Sprint and Bell make).

Eric.
