That would be called spam.  It may contain an image that is tagged to  
you email address.  And it could be 1 white pixel which you'd  
normally never notice.  When your mail program downloads that image,  
you have verified that your email address is in use.  The spammer can  
now sell your info for more $, and usually within 24 hours your  
volume of spam will increase.  The only things you can do are:

put up with the spam
hope you ISP can take the abuse and filter it (getting to be a big  
problem)
set you mail program or spam filter to recognize this as spam and  
filter it on your end
drop your email account

It is wise to set you email program to _not_ download images.  I'm  
going to ask my ISP for a discount as I only have Mac's on my  
network, all with their firewalls turned on, plus a decent firewall  
on my router, plus a firewall on my DSL modem.  This is serious  
overkill, but it was fun getting it configured correctly, and none of  
my machines are zombies...  Knock on wood!  [;^)
