I grew up in NA and I have called them "Chips" all (most) of my
life. I think it is the American Chain Fast food industry that
has made "French Fries" the phrase used. To me there's "des/les
Frites" or "You wanna go for some chips? (or perhaps Fries but
never with the French!) after leaving the pub/bar/tavern (or
Brasserie/taverne).
