Hi Tee,
Sorry to have misled you (and any others). Firstly, the icons do
appear on the desktop OK (I have a PowerMac 7100, a G3, and an iBook.
And 4 CDs - 2 OS 8.0, OS 8.0/8.1 on a G3 CD, and OS 8.5/8.6 on an
iBook CD). The 7100 is my preference for normal use, and has most of
my programs, the iBook, because of its speed, is my choice for
surfing the net, and the G3 is being used as a server.
I'm trying to install a clean System Folder on the 7100 - the hard
drive of which has been formatted for HFS+ (eg with the OS 8.0 CD and
the downloaded 8.1 Upgrade).
The computer will start up from the G3 and iBook CDs (holding down
the C key on restart), and presumably run from there (but obviously
without all the extra Extension, Control Panels, and other programs
I've added). But on attempting to install the new OS, both eventually
display a window which indicates "This program cannot run on your
computer". Attempted installation from the OS 8.0 CD, meantime,
results in a system bomb, requiring a restart. (Seems the rascals
have succeeded in requiring you to purchase an OS CD for every model,
even though it is the same version).
Appears I may have to upgrade to OS 8.5 or 8.6 to avert potential
problems. And an aside - the iBook has OS 9.0 installed, but the CD
that came with it was not the correct one - but that's another story.
