Called the help number Symantec provided (fairly promptly) in response to my
rant about their mess of a program Norton Confidential. Got connected to a very
polite and patient techie somewhere south of the Punjab who took remote control
of my iBook and spent nearly three-quarters of an hour trying to figure out
what was causing the inexplicable and ineradicable 'Error encountered"
messages. By the time he had got the problem in Firefox extended to my other
two browsers, he came to the conclusion I had reached two days earlier and
agreed to arrange for a refund.
After trashing the thing and restarting, I got a fresh e-mail from Symantec
asking me to fill out a survey form on whether my 'issue" had been resolved
satisfactorily, and I no sooner filled it out and sent it than another very
polite gentleman from somewhere south of the Punjab, asking me again whether I
was satisfied with how the problem had been dealt with (he kept using the word
"solved' and I kept saying "dealt with"). I told him I was quite satisfied, or
would be once the refund arrived, and he in turn seemed satisfied with that.
So Norton Confidential is cr*p, its operation wonky, its documentation
contemptible and its support on Symantec's website nonexistent. But at least
they do respond to complaints, if you can find an address to complain to, and
apparently they do give you your money back if all else fails.
