Are these messages from people you know or from strangers?

If they're people you know it could be a virus that's making the rounds in
the Windows world that randomly selects a recipient and a sender from
someone's address book and mails it to that recipient and makes it appear
that it's coming from a third-party sender.

Dealing with it: I think all the e-mail clients allow you to leave messages
over a certain size on the server. In Outlook Express it's under the Tools
menu. Tools:Accounts then double-click on the account and click on the
"Options" tab. You then have the option to "partially receive messages
over". IIRC Eudora has a similar option and I expect that Netscrape
non-Communicator/Mozilla has similar functionality.

There's also an app (POP monitor:
<http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=10437&db=mac>) that allows
you to view the titles of e-mails and delete the ones you don't want to
receive. PS This app apparently can "bounce" e-mails to make it look like
your e-mail address doesn't exist to some spammers (those who monitor + have
a "reply-to" address).

Another one, Mail Beacon may also do what you want:
