You do need to create a playlist. Burning them one at a time is like
previously described - remember the great Canadian novel? iTunes
calculates the number of minutes and the amount of space that it takes.
Look at the bottom center of the iTunes screen. You'll want to the
keep overall size to about 700 MB or less.

After creating the playlist first, highlight the songs you want using
either shift click for groups or command click for single files.
Command click will also let you de-select a file in a group if you
don't want it or you can scroll your list and command click the ones
you want. Be careful because it is easy to deselect all files which
means you have to start over. I usually just select songs on one
screen drag and drop (see next paragraph) and then move to the next
screen of songs.

Once you have some songs picked drag and drop the files onto the play
list by holding the shift key and clicking beside one of the
highlighted songs. ITunes will tell you how many songs you have
picked. Click the playlist name and at the bottom the total size will
appear. Once you have all the songs you think you want click check the
bottom of the screen for file size. At this point you can delete songs
from the playlist if you have too many. iTunes will also tell you if
you have too much to burn on one CD. Check out the iTunes help files as
they provide some good instructions also.
