Absolutely. No matter what you're doing to an image, always do it on a copy,
until you're sure that what you've arrived at is better and until you've
decided that you're never going to need the original again. Don't be too hasty
to decide that, either. You may improve a flawed photo to the best of your
ability and have a result far superior to what you first got from the camera;
but a year or two from now, you may have become more proficient in Photoshop or
whatever, and wish you could start from that original again.
