Tee: Are you by chance running Mail with the "Display Images and embedded objects in HTML" toggled on? If so, try toggling it off (Mail, Prefs, Viewing) and then quitting and restarting mail to see if that helps. Garth. Well mine is so configured & I can't find a system/preference that changes it.
