Would have been my comments also.  I use both FileMaker and Appleworks 
databases extensively.  Have for the past 20 years starting with 
Appleworks on the ][e.  It all depends on what you want to do.  
Microsoft Office was mentioned but generally most installs don't have a 
database function, typically Access.  If the learning curve for 
FileMaker is big the one for Access is likely longer.

I still use AW6 however on OS X you lose the built in macro functions 
that was/is available when run under OS 9.2.2 or earlier.  You can run 
it in Classic mode to get that function back but since you have an 
intel based Mac that won't work. The AW database module is a flat file 
however there are tricks that can expand its scope and provide 
additional functionality.  I find most people haven't really explored 
that part of AW to get the best use of the whole program.

Could you provide more details about what you want to do so we can 
provide some better advice? E.g. a list of address, mail merge, some 
basic accounting, membership lists etc.
