I run the L'il Snitch app, but hardly to its capabilities. And as
George stated, you become aware of all the 'phone home' attempts. But
in the majority of cases, you cannot make an informed decision on
whether it might be spyware or essential connection to accomplish your
app's tasks.

L'il Snitch is a shareware application and one can continue using it
in demo mode if you elect to reset it every 3 hours which is no big
deal as it is about 3 keystrokes. I wrote to the company saying that I
would be happy to purchase the license if they would have some
explanation as to what their popup warnings really meant. Several
reviews in VersionTracker have alluded to the same dilemma. They
responded that they will pass on the feedback, but I'm not holding my
breath.

Their popup box might say that:
"mngx wants to connect through port 84 or to 148.34.23.987" do you
accept or deny? Most often the encrypted short form does not
intuitively relate to the software that it is pointed to. If they
would only hyperlink these coded messages, it would make the software
valuable.
