I used a 30 day trial of Lightroom a while back, from how I remember it you=
have to let Lightroom search all jpgs or other image files on your hard-dr=
ive it creates a thumbnail but the file stays in the directory or iPhoto Li=
brary or cd etc. that it is stored it doesn't make a copy of the original f=
ile unless you want it to. I think the beauty of this is that you can then=
have a small thumbnail in your library but the large data files can be sto=
red elsewhere. You can search the files by whatever is contained in the m=
eta data and key words that you may associate with files. So if you take p=
hoto of cars, hockey, family....... and then diligently associate the photo=
s with a keyword then they can be searched by that and yes the thumbnail co=
ntains the metadata. You can also search for all photos taken at f8 and 1/=
200th of a second if you like, or the camera used or even the lens used, th=
e focal length used etc. and if you have filled in the IPTC content and sav=
ed it in the Metadata it will be searchable. It was very quick at those s=
earches as well but then I only played with several hundred photos in it's =
library I am sure that the more photos there are the slower the search. =20
