How recently did you switch. I remember hearing last year that Bell
was going to allow this to happen but that they weren't going to
advertise the fact (obviously they'd rather keep you as a local
customer, but, since VOIP is becoming popular they're trying to
prevent people from switching phone and high speed internet service to
Rogers).
As for how your computer connects to the internet -- that's pretty
much how all modems should hook up to high speed nowadays. It seems
like the internet companies are getting away from USB (crap) modems
since that requires extra software which means add'l avenues for
something to go wrong and require a customer support call.
What's happening is that your modem is acting as an overblown router.
The modem connects to the ISP's modem and gets its IP address
(probably via DHCP and PPPoE). Then, it acts as a router for your home
network. The computer connects to the modem and obtains an IP address
via DHCP. If you had a hub hooked up to the modem (assuming it has
only one ethernet port) you could use multiple computers with your
high speed connection.
Eric.
