Sounds like it might be a stuck key/key combination - I take it 
from earlier posts that you are running OSX either X.2.x or X.3. 
  I've tried on my system 9.2.2 in both a mail app and AW and all 
works (even using my "repaired" keyboard.

1) Try another keyboard - if problem persists - most likely 
software related or possibly system files?
2) try other applications - if problem persists - most likely 
hardware related or possibly system files?
3) Check keyboard cables - make sure they are plugged all the way in.
