Those characters are called non-printable characters that are not  
meant to be visible.  The problem is that this list is plain text so  
it strips all kinds of info from the message resulting in the non- 
printable characters to be displayed.  The problem lies with the e- 
mail program used to compose the original message in that it does not  
send a true plain text message.  The op should be able to select make  
plain text in the format option of the program and this should remove  
the non-printable characters.  I suspect the message was composed  
using an older program, these characters are in the message to give  
instructions for a printer eg. carriage return, line feed.........

This was explained to me a few years ago in a Yahoo group and I can't  
vouch for this 100% but it seemed to make sense.
