could it be a preference that went bad?
reset InDesign by pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, and launch InDesign
unfortunately you will lose your customized settings
you could also try reverting to a time machine backup (assuming you are doing
this) by restoring the InDesign Preferences from
~Home/Library/Preferences/InDesign/Version 5.0/en_US/
