I seemed to have solved the problem.
After trashing all GarageBand files and folders on my hard drive (or so
I thought) I reinstalled GarageBand from the DVD disc.
When I launched GarageBand and looked at the Loop Browser again most of
the categories as before were greyed out. However, I noticed that it had
automatically loaded a file "My Song" which I had previously saved. I
did a search for it, found it, trashed it, closed and restarted
GarageBand and, this time, all the categories were active!
It seems that the categories displayed in the Loop Browser are dependent
on the song which is loaded. This seems strange to me, since I'd have
thought the point of GarageBand is to enable one to use all categories
to create a new version of an existing file, at least as an option to
creating one from scratch.
Thanks to all for your suggestions.
