[muglo] G4 and Safe Boot?

I'm having strange problems again with my G4 AGP Graphics tower,
running 10.3.9. You may remember it was failing at boot up, right
after it chimed. I zapped the pram, as suggested, and that helped
for awhile, but then the problem happened again.
I took it in for repair. They ran some diagnostics, and couldn't
find anything wrong, except they thought the battery might be
failing, and it was replaced. It was fine again for awhile, but now
the problem is occurring once more. This time there's a new twist.
When I try to zap the pram, it doesn't zap. In other words, I don't
hear the chime, and I get a message as it goes to File Vault "safe
boot." There is no sound, and I can't adjust the sound either. The
sound options are dimmed. I couldn't find any information on "safe
boot." However, I can enter my password as usual in File Vault. I
haven't tried messing around with any of the other System
Preferences, as I thought I'd get your opinion before I proceed much
farther, fearing it might fail altogether at any moment.
Please advise. Thanks,
Leith
