Well, I thought I had the prtoblem licked. It came back again
today - the flashing icons and 4/6. Decided to do a clean install
but it renamed by hard drive 46 after I had clicked on it to open
another folder to get at some files and apps -%$^$#@! At this
point I thought I would give the Dr. a call.
Fortunately Terry Steeper was in when I called. We had sopken
previously and I had follwed his advice then regarding trashing
the desktop file and rebuilding it. Folowing my explanation of
what was happening we (really he) diagnosed a keyboard problem.
A quick switch with another machine (luckily I still have an
older model using the adb connection) reboot and problem solved!
What Terry had me do was use "Key Caps" and describe what it was
doing. There were those 4's and 6's I wrote about the other day
plus a few other keys "up" and "right" arrow, the "control" and
"option" key and some function keys all flashing like mad. Next
step was to disconnect the keyboard, wait for the key stroke
buffer to catch up and voila the icons stopped flashing. Put on
the other keyboard, rebooted and it's working normally again.
The old keyboard is toast according to Terry. It is the original
one I got with the machine and apparently it has a membrane pad
that once it goes it's shot. I will of course take it apart and
have a look (if it's broke it certainly won't hurt it!!).
After the Dr. was done I ran TechTool Pro again and no problems
found! I'm actually typing this on a new keyboard that I pick up
from Terry (talk about luck, he was coming into London about an
hour after I called him so needless tosay (so why am I saying
it?) arrangements were made).
I'm a happy camper - Thank you Terry Steeper!!
