[muglo] Re: Fwd: Mac will run Windows

There are a number of options for people who don't want to reboot into Wind=
ows:

1. Virtual PC (yes, I am confident MS will release Virtual PC for Macintels=
)
2. WINE (still in development [a]) -- open source and does NOT require
Windows to run some Windows applications
3. Apple provides the ability to run Windows in a 'virtual machine' in
OS X 10.5 [b]
4.Third party does #3 [c]
5. VMWare gets released for OS X (same as 3 & 4)
6. ?

The advantage to running 'virtual machines' (VM) is that the VM does
NOT have to emulate the CPU. All it does is set up a space where
Windows can run as a Mac OS X application (just like Classic runs as a
glorified 'application' under Mac OS X) without having to be emulated.
This means that there's only a minor speed penalty (like with
Classic).

Virtual PC for PowerPC is something completely different. In that
case, the software needs to convert each Intel command to an
equivalent PowerPC command. This takes a _lot_ of processing power --
much like trying to read the original Crime and Punishment
(Dostoyevsky) by using a Russian-English dictionary to translate each
word one-at-a-time.

I suspect that moving Virtual PC to Macintel Mac OS X should be a
trivial task by comparison. They already have the framework for
operating with Mac OS X (which hasn't changed), and, they have the
experience with building Virtual PC for Windows on Windows computers
to draw upon for the i86 side of things.

PS There's also something called 'mol' (mac on linux) that allows a
Mac OS to run under a PowerPC Linux (it's also been running under Mac
OS X to allow Mac OS X to run another Mac OS (9 or X) but it's never
been that successful).
